The
Breast Cancer Registry of Greater Cincinnati (BCRGC)
is a local program designed to obtain information
from and about women and men diagnosed with breast
cancer. The purpose of the Registry is to support
research about the causes of breast cancer.
The Registry is operated by researchers in the
Department of Environmental Health at the University
of Cincinnati College of Medicine experienced in
cancer registries and epidemiologic research. The
Registry Advisory Board consists of representatives
from the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greater
Cincinnati, Patterns Inc., Pink Ribbon Girls,
Sisters Network Cincinnati and other service
providers. In addition, persons with expertise in
breast cancer treatment, screening and law
voluntarily serve on the Board.
The Registry is voluntary. Participants
enroll by signing a consent form and completing
a questionnaire about their breast cancer diagnosis,
treatment and reoccurrence; family history of breast
cancer; environmental and occupational exposures;
residential history, etc. All the information is
confidential and protected by UC’s strict
standards for protecting confidentiality and the
rights of people who participate in registries and
research studies.
The purpose of the registry is to support local
studies that:
| |
• |
increase our knowledge
about who has breast cancer in Greater
Cincinnati; |
| |
• |
identify factors that may
make persons more susceptible to breast cancer
such as environmental chemicals, diet,
radiation and genetic factors; and
|
| |
• |
improve health education,
prevention services and/or public policy
related to breast cancer. |
The Registry focuses
on the causes of breast cancer, a crucial first step
in prevention. The Registry is not a clinical
trial. There are no treatments or testing of
drugs. Any woman or man ever diagnosed with breast
cancer is eligible to enroll in the Registry.
If you want to enroll, go to the Women or Men tab of
this website and print the consent and registration
forms. (The registration questionnaire is slightly
different for women and men.) If you prefer, you can
contact us by e-mail at
breastcancerregistry@uc.edu or call us at
513.558.0854. When you write or call us, please
leave your name and complete mailing address so we
can forward to you an enrollment packet. If you have
questions, please include a call back phone number.
Researchers apply to the Registry for help in
locating research study participants. All research
studies must be approved by the Advisory Board, the
Registry Director and the relevant Institutional
Review Board. Registry members eligible to
participate in an approved research study are
contacted by the Registry to determine their
interest. Registry members must give written
permission to be contacted by a researcher
conducting a Registry-approved study. |
