Looking Upstream for Environmental Links to Breast Cancer

Sponsored by the Cincinnati Breast Cancer & the Environment Research Center

There is increasing scientific evidence that environmental factors impact breast development, health and disease. This program is your opportunity to learn from experts about the science we already know, what it means, and why it matters - all explained in everyday language.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Marcia Herman-Giddens, Adjunct Professor of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill School of Public Health. An internationally-known expert on pubertal maturation, her presentation will address the social, cultural and environmental factors which may be causing early puberty in girls and the implications for public health interventions.

Other featured speakers include:

Hiba S. Ernst, PhD, Environmental Scientist, US EPA Technical Support Center, Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water, Cincinnati. Dr. Ernst will discuss how water quality is regulated and monitored in the US.

Scott Belcher, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology & Cell Biophysics, University of Cincinnati. Dr. Belcher will discuss how low doses of the chemical bisphenol A, an endocrine-disrupting compound found in many products of everyday use, affects fetal brain development and may pose a significant health risk for other diseases.
