*Applied Ergonomics at Toyota
Toyota Motor
Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.
Toyota was just named to the Top 10 World’s Most
Admired Companies 2008 by Fortune Magazine. Four Toyota models (Lexus LS 460L,
Prius, RAV4, & Sienna) recently made the Consumer Reports Top 10 Picks 2008,
which is the most by any car manufacturer this year. “Kaizen”, the Japanese
term for continuous improvement, is an often spoken word at Toyota. Likewise,
ergonomics is an often applied discipline at all of Toyota’s North American
manufacturing facilities—before and after the start of vehicle production. Come
listen to speakers who will describe key elements of Toyota’s ergonomics
program, which integrates research principles, applied knowledge, and
operational experience to continuously optimize worker performance.

*World Usability Day
LexisNexis
In support of World Usability Day, professionals
and colleagues in the Dayton-Cincinnati region are hosting an interactive
networking meeting at LexisNexis. This local event, sponsored by Reed Elsevier
and the Southern Ohio and Tri-State Chapters of the Human Factors and Ergonomics
Society, features Dr. John F. Kelley, president of the Human Factors and
Ergonomics Society and Senior Managing Consultant, IBM Global Business Services,
as the evening keynote speaker.

*Student Poster Session and
Special Q&A: Getting a Job in Human Factors
Join us for a panel discussion featuring
professionals from industry, academia, and government as they share
their real-world experience of getting a job and working in the field of Human
Factors /Ergonomics. All panelists are employed in the greater Cincinnati area
and transitioned from being students to HF/E professionals in the past 6 years
or so. Their experiences will illustrate the varied career
possibilities available to HF/E students - as well as what it takes to "get your
foot in the door" in the current job market. The discussion promises to give
future HF/E professionals insight into employment options, possible internship
possibilities, and networking strategies. A question and answer session will
follow the panel discussion. Students from around the Tri-State area are
encouraged to present posters of their research in the supportive environment of
the local chapter.

*The
influence of 'competing task' location on working postures
in alternating computing and handwriting
work
Robert Stuthridge,
Senior Ergonomist,
Integrated Ergonomics, LLC
For many office workers, the 'paperless office'
has not arrived; a significant number of computer users, whilst relying
principally on keyboard, mouse and display screen, still find it essential to
perform handwriting to a greater or lesser degree. The use of handwriting
routinely accompanies telephone conversations, when making notes, but may also
occur wherever a paper document must be marked during computer operation -
whether checking a call-sheet in a contact center or annotating a document in a
binder (photographic examples will feature prominently). During field-based risk
assessment work in a variety of environments, it was noted that the location of
the handwriting task invariably competes with (and takes precedence over)
keyboard and/or mouse in terms of optimum task location, leading to elevated
risk postures of the trunk, neck and upper-limbs when reaching to the computer
input devices. Previous studies exploring working postures have tended to focus
on either typing or handwriting. The optimum location of each of these tasks in
isolation is straightforward enough, but achieving the optimum location when
mixed is more complex. The need to optimize both handwriting and computing
device location led to the design and development of a practical solution, the
ErgoRiteTM. The rationale for, and efficacy of, the solution is considered by
the study presented here. The relevance of the findings to applied ergonomics -
particularly reduction of risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders - will
be explored and the ErgoRiteTM device will be demonstrated.|
