The Cincinnati MPH Admission Criteria and Process

We welcome your application to study public health at the University of Cincinnati. If at any point you have any questions regarding the admissions process, please feel free to contact us as described at the bottom of this page.

Admissions Criteria
Acceptance to the master of public health degree will depend upon the admissions committee's review of the complete set of credentials submitted by each candidate.

The admissions committee has identified the following as criteria for consideration for acceptance to MPH studies:

  • The applicant must possess at least a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and have achieved a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of approximately 3.0 (all calculations are based on a 4.0 scale). Official transcripts of all colleges and universities must be submitted. These must be official therefore copies cannot replace official records from higher educational institutions attended.

  • Official GRE scores, sent directly from the testing agency (ETS) must be provided. The University of Cincinnati MPH admissions committee seeks applicants with scores in the 50th percentile on both the quantitative and verbal sections and a 4.0 or greater on the analytical writing sections. For applicants enrolled in or having graduated from an LCME-accredited medical school, MCAT scores may be substituted. Applicants with an earned graduate or advanced professional degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or Canada are not required to submit GRE scores. Note: The USMLE and ECFMG will not be considered in lieu of the GRE.

  • International students must take the TOEFL exam and submit official scores directly from the testing agency of a minimum of 580 (paper) 237 (computer) or 93 (internet) to be considered for the program.

  • Applicants must submit a letter or brief essay (no more than three pages, double spaced) that will allow the admissions committee to assess their commitment to safeguarding and improving the public's health, and outlining how completing the MPH program is consistent with their career and life goals.

  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic or professional background. Individuals who have not been involved in an academic institution for two years or more may submit letters of recommendation by supervisors from his/her place of employment. The letters should include an assessment of your current work quality and ability to successfully complete graduate training. Please address letters to the University of Cincinnati Master of Public Health Admissions Committee.

  • All applicants recommended for admission will be interviewed prior to a final admissions determination.

Admissions to the program is competitive, particularly in these developmental years when admitted classes will be smaller than those at program maturity. We anticipate that admitted students will possess credentials substantially in excess of those described above.

Admissions Processes and Deadlines
Program admission is available on a rolling basis.
The deadline for completion of applications (including submission of all application materials and, if necessary, an interview) is one month prior to the beginning of the term for which the applicant is seeking admission. For example, for consideration for Fall enrollment the deadline would approximately be mid-August, for Winter enrollment it would be early December, and for Spring enrollment it would be late February. These deadline dates can be ascertained from the university's academic calendar.
